Widespread Abuse and Torture Uncovered at Synagogue Church of All Nations: The Dark Legacy of TB Joshua

by Ncamiso Xaba on January 09 2024

Introduction

Evidence of shocking abuse and torture committed by the late founder of one of the world's largest Christian evangelical churches, the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), has been unearthed by a two-year investigation conducted by the BBC. Former members, including five British nationals, have come forward with harrowing testimonies, alleging atrocities such as rape, forced abortions, physical violence, and psychological manipulation. These allegations span almost two decades and provide a disturbing insight into the actions of TB Joshua, a charismatic and influential figure in the global religious landscape. This article delves into the findings of the investigation and sheds light on the experiences of victims who suffered under Joshua's reign.

The Allegations

The BBC's investigation reveals a multitude of eyewitness accounts documenting the physical violence and torture inflicted by TB Joshua. Disturbing instances of child abuse, individuals being whipped and chained, and women being sexually assaulted are among the allegations. Multiple victims have come forward, asserting that they were repeatedly raped by Joshua, often for years, within the confines of the SCOAN compound. Shockingly, several women claim to have undergone forced abortions as a result of the alleged rapes, with one victim reporting as many as five terminations.

Additionally, the investigation uncovers firsthand accounts detailing how Joshua manipulated and staged "miracle healings" that were broadcasted to millions of viewers worldwide. This revelation casts doubt on the authenticity of his purported supernatural powers and raises questions about the ethical implications of his practices.

Victims' Testimonies

Rae, a British woman, recounts her traumatic experiences as one of Joshua's disciples inside the SCOAN compound. She reveals that she was sexually assaulted and subjected to solitary confinement for two years, leading to multiple suicide attempts. Jessica Kaimu, from Namibia, shares her ordeal of enduring over five years of abuse, including rape and forced abortions. Many victims joined the church as teenagers, highlighting the vulnerability and susceptibility of young individuals targeted by Joshua's manipulative tactics.

Scope and Impact

The SCOAN, with its global following and Christian TV channel called Emmanuel TV, has amassed a significant viewership and influence. Tens of thousands of pilgrims from around the world flocked to Nigeria to witness Joshua's alleged healing miracles, and at least 150 individuals lived as disciples within the SCOAN compound. The investigation reveals that victims hailed from various countries, including the UK, Nigeria, the US, South Africa, Ghana, Namibia, and Germany. The testimonies provided by more than 25 former disciples present powerful corroborating evidence, with some experiences as recent as 2019.

TB Joshua's Legacy and Controversies

Despite his immense popularity and status as one of Africa's most influential pastors, TB Joshua faced controversy during his lifetime. In 2014, a guesthouse for church pilgrims collapsed, resulting in the deaths of at least 116 people. The circumstances surrounding the tragedy raised concerns about the safety and accountability of the SCOAN.

Silencing and Intimidation

Former church insiders, who have attempted to raise the alarm about the abuse, claim to have been effectively silenced and intimidated. Witnesses in Nigeria report physical attacks and threats after speaking out against the abuse, while a BBC crew was fired upon by church security when attempting to document the SCOAN compound. Such actions further underscore the atmosphere of fear and control that allegedly prevailed within the church.

Responses and Calls for Further Investigation

The SCOAN did not respond to the specific allegations raised during the investigation but denied previous claims against TB Joshua. However, four British citizens who escaped the church assert that their reports of abuse to UK authorities resulted in no further action. In 2010, a British man and his wife emailed the British High Commission in Nigeria, providing eyewitness accounts and video evidence of their ordeal. They claimed that no action was taken at that time.

The investigation concludes with Anneka, a former member from the UK, expressing her belief that there are numerous victims yet to speak out. She calls for a comprehensive investigation into how TB Joshua was allowed to operate with impunity for so long and hopes that further steps will be taken to uncover the full extent of his actions.

Conclusion

The revelations brought to light by the BBC's investigation into the SCOAN and its late founder, TB Joshua, expose a distressing pattern of widespread abuse and torture. The testimonies of numerous victims, supported by corroborating evidence, shed light on the dark legacy of a prominent religious figure who wielded immense influence. The allegations of rape, forced abortions, physical violence, and manipulation demand a thorough examination and a commitment to justice for the victims. It is crucial to ensure that those responsible for these heinous acts are held accountable, and measures are put in place to prevent such abuses from occurring within religious institutions in the future.
